B is for Butterfly

Billions of blue blistering barnacles, it’s time for letter B! My friends were all betting I would jump at the opportunity to wax poetic about my favorite B in the whole world: Bruce. (For the uninformed, that’s Dickinson, not Springsteen.) But nah – been there, blogged about him a while back.

So…..

I’ve decided to celebrate something simpler – butterfly kisses. A butterfly kiss does not involve the lips, it involves the lashes. There are many ways to properly perform a butterfly kiss, but may I suggest the following method:

1. Find someone you adore.

2. Invade their personal space (with their permission, of course).

3. Position your head near theirs, so that your left lashes are close to their left cheek.

4. Blink rapidly, profusely, adorably against their cheek.

5. Repeat w. right lashes/right cheek.

6. Switch places, and see step 1.

I don’t think I fully appreciated the sweet simplicity of the butterfly kiss until my daughter was born. I come from a lineage of long-lashed folk, and she is no exception. When she was a newborn, I swear I watched as her eyelashes uncurled one by one to create these beautiful, delicate fans on her cheeks. Perfect for performing such a kiss, and she was perfect to practice upon.

Butterfly Kisses

Inspiration

In the haze and craze of new motherhood, I don’t remember exactly the first time I taught her to butterfly kiss. Maybe she has an early memory of it. But now it’s a favorite, quiet wonderful way to say ‘love you’ between the two of us. Have you butterfly kissed someone today?
