Billions of blue blistering barnacles, it’s time for letter B! My friends were all betting I would jump at the opportunity to wax poetic about my favorite B in the whole world: Bruce. (For the uninformed, that’s Dickinson, not Springsteen.) But nah – been there, blogged about him a while back.
So…..
I’ve decided to celebrate something simpler – butterfly kisses. A butterfly kiss does not involve the lips, it involves the lashes. There are many ways to properly perform a butterfly kiss, but may I suggest the following method:
1. Find someone you adore.
2. Invade their personal space (with their permission, of course).
3. Position your head near theirs, so that your left lashes are close to their left cheek.
4. Blink rapidly, profusely, adorably against their cheek.
5. Repeat w. right lashes/right cheek.
6. Switch places, and see step 1.
I don’t think I fully appreciated the sweet simplicity of the butterfly kiss until my daughter was born. I come from a lineage of long-lashed folk, and she is no exception. When she was a newborn, I swear I watched as her eyelashes uncurled one by one to create these beautiful, delicate fans on her cheeks. Perfect for performing such a kiss, and she was perfect to practice upon.
In the haze and craze of new motherhood, I don’t remember exactly the first time I taught her to butterfly kiss. Maybe she has an early memory of it. But now it’s a favorite, quiet wonderful way to say ‘love you’ between the two of us. Have you butterfly kissed someone today?
I love butterfly kisses but somehow I missed that they were supposed to be on the cheek! I’ve always butterfly kissed my lovey’s eyelashes (and he’s never complained). Funny!! Wonder where I got that from!
Actually Merritt, I have heard of people doing it directly on each other’s lashes, too! I don’t know if little children are coordinated as us, though. I would hate to get an eye poke by their eager eyelashes! (ooh, there’s some new “E” words!)
You make an excellent point!! (And those are some GREAT “E” words! How did I have so much trouble coming up with one!?)
I have not butterfly-kissed someone today but I think it’s time to wake up the husband and do so.
It will be like Tinkerbell landing on his cheek. Perhaps he will dress up as Peter Pan for you after all. π
Thank you for reminding me of these. It has been too long since I’ve given my nearly 10 year old any butterfly kisses. I know what is getting added to her wakeup cuddle tomorrow.
Oooh, the wakeup cuddle! I need to implement that, esp. since my 10 year old always wants the cuddle at night…therefore delaying the inevitable bedtime. Thanks for the tip!
ah, the memories of a butterfly kiss.. thanks. π
You’re welcome – thanks for stopping by!
Aw, now I wish my husband wasn’t on the road. Nice post!
Thanks! Save all those butterflies up for when he gets home. π
I share them with special people all the time. I’m especially a fan of doing them to my friends’ babies. Love this post. π
Aw, that’s great. Babies and their fresh skin – so butterfly kissable!
Very sweet post. We were also fallen lash wishers and eskimo kissers π
Thank you!
I’ve heard of Butterfly kisses. But we were big on eskimo kisses when I was little. (where you rub noses)
Love the post!
Thank you! Eskimo kisses are great and fun too!
Sweet. Not heard of this before, wasn’t butterfly kissed as a child. I feel I missed out.
mood
It’s never too late, mood! (Try it on your hand, it tickles.)
My son does the eye flutter to me occasionally – but from afar. He does, however, love to rub noses with both me and his Daddy. Funny the ways they show us they love us.
Absolutely…funny, tender, sweet and wacky!
Your daughter is precious. The only thing better than exchanging butterfly kisses with my kids is now … exchanging them with my grandkids. Happy A-Zing.
Oh, that’s a wonderful gift – enjoy!
Very cute post.
Looking forward to seeing what you do all month!

Thanks for stopping by. I really have no idea what the hell I am doing for the rest of the month! But I am looking forward to it too.
I’m more of stare in wonderment at their juicy, young skin/bones/rolls and ask permission to tweak kind of mom! I do make them wish on fallen lashes though…
Fallen lash wishes are very important to know about!
